Dirk Kestner Bio
Principal / Director of Sustainable Design, Walter P Moore
Dirk Kestner is a Principal and the corporate Director of Sustainable Design for Walter P Moore, a 600-person structural and enclosure engineering firm with a worldwide portfolio. Dirk is a licensed Professional Engineer and is a LEED AP BD+C. He received a BS from Cornell University and a MS from The University of Texas at Austin.
Dirk is the current vice-chair of the LEED Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group (MR TAG) and was the founding chairman of the Sustainability Committee for The Structural Engineering Institute, an organization which represents over twelve thousand structural engineers nationwide. He also served as an editor and coordinator of the committee’s book Sustainability Guidelines for the Structural Engineer and is currently leading development of a pre-standard for defining a reference building for Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (WBLCA) comparisons.
He is currently pursuing the LEED WBLCA credit via Pilot Credit 63 and LEED v4 on five projects including Capitol Tower, the first LEED V4 project in the US to attempt the LCA credit. He has also performed comparative LCA’s on ten other buildings that did not pursue LEED ratings. He has extensive experience with both the ATHENA and Tally WBLCA tools, and was the invited speaker at The Athena Institute’s 2016 general meeting.
