Chief Building Official - Town of Newmarket

Dave Potter has held positions of Plans Examiner and Building Inspector as well as responsibilities for Bylaw Enforcement and Property Standards during his 34 year career working in the municipal sector.
 
He has provided Building Code Consulting Services to other municipal jurisdictions, the Insurance industry, builders and designers on matters related to the application and interpretation of the Building Code. 
 
Dave's formal education includes a Diploma in Architectural Technology from Centennial College, a Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management from Ryerson and a Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Western Ontario. He obtained his Instructor Training Syllabus Certificate from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing 16 years ago and has delivered a variety of courses and seminars to Building Officials, designers, builders and Home Inspectors. Dave developed the 'Speaking in Code' seminar series based on the 1998 Code changes which included air barrier systems, soil gas control and guard design standards.   
 
As a member of the Metro Area Code Interpretation Committee Dave chaired the committee that developed the original TACBOC Standard Details and he chaired the 1992 Annual OBOA conference in Richmond Hill.
 
Dave is a founding member of the Building Code Conservation Advisory Council which provides strategic advice to the Minister on matters relating to energy and water conservation. 
 
He is currently Chair of the Ontario Building Code Part 5 and Part 12 Technical Review Committees, a member of the OHBA/OBOA working group on SB-12 and a representative on Tarion’s CPG Industry Review Committee.
